DIMITRIS HATZIS, 15, ROBOT MAKER
High school student Dimitris is one of just six people worldwide to have built a 3D printed, life-size humanoid InMoov robot. It all started when he was still in fifth grade and saw the movie “Real Steel,” which is about robots battling in the boxing ring.
“I loved it and so I started working on constructing my own robot. A year later I managed to complete my first project, which was a robotic arm made up of seven motors and run by a special code I wrote myself.”
After 1,400 hours of experimentation, adjustments and repairs, and with the help of a 3D printer he built himself, Troopy, a functioning open-source humanoid robot, came to life.
“All of the stages were a major challenge. I faced all sorts of problems but I managed to solve them alone.”
Dimitris was recently presented with the Young Innovators and Entrepreneurs prize, a special category of the acclaimed Kouros entrepreneurship awards. He also participated in the Maker Faire Berlin 2015 for new applications. This year, he plans to take part in the CeBIT technology expo and the 3D Printshow in London or Amsterdam. He is also busy working on his next ambitious project, but tells Blue that he cannot divulge any details. He wants to go on to university to study and become an engineer, and has an important wish for the future: “I hope that all people can realise their dreams so that the world can become a better place.”
